Robot & Frank-Film Review

Robot & Frank-Film Review

I always think you can tell a really good film by the feeling you get once it’s ended. After watching Robot & Frank I felt exactly the same as I do when finishing a good book, a feeling quite hard to describe but somewhere between learning something important and uplifted spirits.

The flim follows Frank an ex cat-burgler who is living his days growing old and doing pretty much nothing. His son who travels far each weekend to see him concerned about his health, brings him a personal care android a.k.a Robot.

The flim is available on Netflix and is funny, dramatic and moving, whilst still keeping its sic-fi roots.

The flim explores the ever changing relationship of Frank and the Robot which starts out with Frank being very reluctant with having a robot around him, even though this robot makes dinner, cleans and even gardens.

Their relationship grows as Frank realises that the robot can be used to help him start stealing again. While this relationship grows you start to realise that Frank is suffering from Alzheimer’s and that’s why his son gave him the robot. After a huge jewellery theft the poilce are on to Frank and his robot, only after first thinking Frank was too frail to pull off a heist and then realising the robot could have assisted him. The robot who cares about Franks wellfare wants to erase his memory so it cannot be used as evidence but Frank protective of the robot he now classes as a friend doesn’t want that.

The idea of memory and how precious it is, is displayed in the parallel of how both Frank and Robot view losing their memory. Is it our memories that make ourselves ? Or even with our memories gone are we still the same person?

It is a must watch even after reading this, as I tried to not give too many details away.

I adore Susan Sarandon, have done ever since I first saw The Rocky Horror Show, so this is unmissable for me! <3
